Castello di Arceto

Discover a typical example of a well-preserved medieval castle where the circuits of the moats and walls are still legible, with traces of the drawbridge, ravelin and pusterla tower. Inside are the village, the oratory dedicated to San Rocco and the fortress proper, the heart of the castle's military defence.

A bit of History

The construction of the castle is placed in the second half of the 10th century by the bishops of Reggio Emilia. After a long rule by the Fogliani family, Arceto passed to the Boiardo family in 1414. During the rule of these feudal lords, the fortress, the buildings facing it and the entrance tower underwent massive restoration work.
In 1565 the castle became the property of the Thiene counts, to whom is attributed the building of the oratory dedicated to San Rocco. The

to consolidate and restore the fortress, which was now uninhabitable, modifying its entire form. He erected the entrance tower ex novo, added side buildings, and decorated and reorganised the interior of the stately residence. Other interventions included the replacement of the dilapidated drawbridge with a stone construction, used as a gateway, and the construction, in 1751, of a monumental staircase adorned with five terracotta statues, only two of which have survived.
Currently, the municipal administration owns a portion of the castle including the sumptuous staircase and some rooms on the main floor. After a challenging restoration recently completed, it is possible to admire these spaces restored to their former 18th-century decorative richness.
